Auth felt Mother's mind sharpen at the prospect of a meal. But her thoughts were unfocused, they dwelt of matters beyond the meat.

Auth did not understand this.

Auth enjoyed living vicariously through Mother now and again, especially for such sensations as eating. They were excited for the time they would get to experience it themselves and could already feel their hunger growing. But Mother's thoughts were not aligned with her actions this time and Auth took no pleasure in the meal. They could feel her worry and frustrations, her mind dwelling on problems with "holders" and practical matters. Auth was not interested in any such things. They hoped beyond hope they would not hatch to be gold because it seemed both streeful and tedious. Though they had recently decided to be more aware of others and less inwardly focused, Auth just couldn't manage to summon any interest in these "holder people". Perhaps their mindfulness would only extend to dragonkind.

Mother began to concentrate on the herdbeast in front of her then, pushing aside her duties. But it was difficult for Auth to truly enjoy the experience when they could still feel the weight of concern on her.

Disappointed, Auth retreated from Mother's worries and found something else to occupy themselves for the time being.
