4 - Alternate Response: Thresholds

The moment has come: hatching. It is a step -- or a tumble, or a slouch -- from one form of life to the next. In the split second between Egg and Dragonet, the very definition of reality shifts and throws everything that came before into darkness. Within hours, egg life will be a dream. In a few weeks, all that will remain is that pungent oneiric wistfulness we all know from our childhoods.

It is a very hard thing to move past that threshold. Or is it instead the easiest thing, only painful in retrospect?

Compose a poem or piece of art to represent your dragonet transitioning from egghood to motile life. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • A eulogy or “vent art” representing the death of the egg self
  • A paean or impressionistic representation of the hope of childhood
  • A study of the meaning of impression
  • A narrative of hatching through two conflicting frames
  • A narrative of the Hatching Grounds/Weyrbowl itself
  • A depiction of a liminal moment
  • Your dragonet in your own style, as a different fanonical interpretation
