The Fool:

14 / m

So very young, the Fool skips through the door-flaps with a grin on his beatific face. There is nothing that can hold him down, not rain or shine or dark of night; his optimism is infectious. He looks over the eggs and sees so many new beginnings, so much promise and life. He does not see the empty hollows, the cracks and scars. The Fool lets the whims of his feet guide him around the clutch, almost at a run, not thinking how much he could hurt the fragile eggs if he happened to trip.

The Lovers:

22 / m

At first, they seem as one, but as the twins approach they are revealed as two wholes nevertheless enmeshed. The Lovers do everything together, and candidacy is no different. Apart they may peer at different eggs but their thoughts echo the other’s and with words aloud each shares his findings. The Lovers look eagerly for the Hatching Day, but their inner thoughts reveal parallel fears: what if the will of fate pulls them apart? What if, one thinks but not the other, he’s the one left behind?

The Hermit:

21 / f

It may have been the Candidatemaster’s word that allowed her entrance, but being here, in the tents among the eggs in this moment, was all due to the Hermit’s fate. She had felt a calling to become a candidate; she couldn’t know whether this hatching would be her time, but the Hermit knew with a bone-deep certainty she was where she belonged. The truth of it, however much it buoyed her, was not warm and inviting. The Hermit was lonely and adrift, pulled forward by a capricious fate.

The Hanged Man:

20 / m

He was whistling when he stepped through into the tents, a jaunty tune that seemed like it was running too fast. The Hanged Man brushed his hands over the shells, eyes skipping over the cracks and dents, wondering which had a fighting dragon in it, which would fly and flame and carry him out in a blaze of glory. He wanted to live fast and die a hero -- what a relief that would be for him, for Pern. And glorious while it lasted...

The Devil:

15 / f

The Devil was a young girl in an ill-fitting dress. The Devil clutched the front of it and wished it was a sumptuous gown, wished she could be somewhere with music and dancing and laughter. But she wasn’t. There was much her hungry eyes and heart desired, and when she saw the eggs she grinned, nearly skipping among them and playfully teasing each one she passed. The Devil wanted. And yet there was freedom in knowing she didn’t have a choice.
