Warm-mother is important, now.
Technically, she has always been important, Courth knows this. There are only three golds. Golds are the ones who lay and lead (by general consensus). But he has learnt that Issrodeth led…more. Whatever that meant. Issrodeth had only been important in matters of finding out more of the world. She has her own little parcel of information in his head, sure, but he doesn’t miss hearing her speak out.
Now, Gwillanth is the one who leads more. Courth knows this will be useful – she will come back with more thoughts of the weyr, Shayled will be thinking more about the matters that he’s never heard about before. It will be interesting.
It also means she’s not just looking after the clutch anymore and some childish part of Courth that remembers thinking the two of them were the only creatures in the world, that all her attention was reserved for him, hates this.
Stupid. Childish. Illogical. He stuffs the hurt down under piles of new information – how much larger is the weyr than what they can feel? How much land needs to be scouted? What does scouting entail? Could he be a part of this, in the future? This shifting and organising of people and dragons, so much like double checking equations until the numbers make sense. He wants to be (and he shudders at the need for metaphor) the vtol on the wall for this conversation so badly it hurts.
Or maybe that’s the thought of being left behind.
