Rocranth’s ferocity did her heart good to hear him call out like that, but his bluster was a touch too brash compared to the tone of her thoughts, recently.

In truth, once she understood how she had split from Gwillanth, the notion had long bubbled deep in the depths of her mind, but that she hadn’t found the best way to articulate. Something all her own, the sound that would be all hers.

Her own word of power.

It took so much time for her to get it right. She picked up and discarded different sounds, strung them together like jewels, and then cast them aside again and again. Finally, she knew. A name borne of concepts she could have only gleaned through the shared hazy dreams of her mother: the desert wind is blowing across the dunes, great wings unfurling and whipping up grains of sand all around her. the currents of the wind as she flies ever skyward, the breeze rustling the fronds of palm trees glowing in the setting sun. These are the satisfying sibilations she has chosen to honor with the creation of her own name.

Her own word of power.

I will call myself Synnevath,” she whispers, and now she’s water-cool and soft, but confident, “and you will call me that too.” There’s the slightest hint of an edge to her declaration; no shortened nicknames or diminutives for this one, from the sound of it.

You could practically hear the beaming in the sound of her mindvoice. “Mother-Gwillanth will love my name. She dreamed it just for me.

|| Synneva ||
This name derives from the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) name “Sunngifu,” composed of two elements: “sunna / sunne” (sun) plus “ġiefu / ġiefan” (gift, to give). In turn, the name means “kissed by the sun, the gift of the sun.” ⁂
