The creature inside an egg is very susceptible to all kinds of feelings. Love, anger, sadness, guilt. But there is something that Tasted Fire hasn’t felt so purely as what it feels from the fighting blue and green. Tasted Fire can almost taste it, and it recoils from the idea of hatred that rolls through the dragon’s minds. All of the dragon’s minds that are clued into the fight. Some of the minds react with interest, others fear, and still others determination.
Tasted Fire is also determined. From its spot next to its siblings, it finds that it’s determined to ignore whatever the two are fighting over. After all, it is not a part of their fight and, though it wants out, it wants out of its shell only to pry them away from each other and tell them that they are both no better than itself, a hatchling, for acting as they did.
They should not be fighting themselves. They should be fighting Thread like the proper soldiers they should be. They should be friendly with each other, for if they weren’t, then they wouldn’t get along when facing their main threat.
The rush of emotions dies down, and Tasted Fire is left with the aftermath, the words echoed in its mind as it wrapped its head around them. For the first time it truly thought. A dragon must choose its rider–Tasted Fire knew this intrinsically. Just like a dragon must choose its name–something it was still figuring out. But what if a rider didn’t want it, wasn’t the perfect fit?
A shiver rolled through Tasted Fire’s unhatched body. No, it decided, it would love whoever it Impressed to; it would find the best match. It didn’t matter if it hatched first or last, it would hatch and it would find its rider. It wouldn’t resort to petty squabbles with other dragons, and Tasted Fire knew it would never act in such a way to others. It loved others too much to knowingly cause a scene like that.
Right?
