First of all: What is the deal with these strange voices? These heard-but-not-felt voices? Their words were not felt the way that others were. Mother's voice, mellifluous and golden, and then Pertemarth, who was softer but constant, shimmering on the periphery.
Mother's good humor was best of all.
This laughter felt good.
To laugh, to cause to laugh.
The way they regarded each other charmed Sunbeam. She held onto each word with such import, trying to divine their meaning. Being incoherent and senseless there in the egg felt like another lifetime ago already!

Much of the nuance of their humor or grown-up implications are lost on Sunbeam, but it’s a good start for the ravenous learner.
