Novelty was, in fact, nothing novel to the being inside the comet-striped egg. Every day brought with it new delights and discoveries. Its world was ever-expanding, so much more vast than it ever could have imagined. Words had already become a delicious treat, and the revelation that they could hold deeper meanings led to thoughts of what else words could do, or what could be done with them.
As it turned out, words could be played with.
Not all second, or even third meanings, of words had to be deep or soul-calling, they could be whimsical or suave or hold meanings the little unborn dragonet did not know or understand, and likely would not for some time yet. Laughter was a kind of song, and a skillfully turned word could bring about this most wonderful of melodies. Puns, it decided, were the best sort of humor. They were, after all, plays on words, and what was play without laughter? Yes, puns were most eggcellent yolks (did you see? did you see what it did there?! Ha ha! Egg puns!)
It did not quite yet grasp the concept of innuendos, too subtle yet were those comments for one with such a bold song. But they felt fun, and it would figure them out someday, it was sure.
Politeness, well, that perhaps wasn't so fun as the others, but seemed, well, polite. Certainly its usefulness matched the feelings the young creature had about insults (no thank you). It liked the polite ones, the ones that asked, the ones that listened. Though, perhaps, there was such a thing as too polite, when the feeling became stiff or insincere. It did not think that quite counted as politeness anymore, not really.
Oh, but there were so many more lessons to learn! How worderful this world could be! (He he, puns)
