Mother is upset.

The Opal egg considers this plight. Where Mother once stood as an anchor, a bastion of all that was Right in the world, they know now to be otherwise. This new development, the sad-wistful-concern-longing that echoes back only further cements this.

Mother is upset, and that makes the egg roil in turbulent, conflicting emotions. Mother should not be upset. This is an intrinsic, instinctual realization. And the others know this, for from them comes the tides of concern and questioning, some even bringing comfort.

Pitiful, the Opal egg thinks. The foundation of the pedestal upon which it held Mother cracks just a little more. Perhaps they are that lacking in empathy, or maybe they are simply gaining the incorrect insight to the situation.

Mother is weak for this, the egg concludes. These emotions (concern, sadness, longing) are unpleasant and unwanted, and Mother should be better than to let herself succumb to these bad-feelings. And so it is not concern that comes from this one's shell, but pity and disgust.

Weakness and vulnerability, that is Mother in this moment. These are things that they will strive to never be. They will be better than this.
