As the Child watched Mother, her new sense of Outside a never-ending delight, slowly, subtly, without much notice, other minds, small and still forming, slid past her consciousness.

Some were warm, similar to Mother, others a wash of noise. Some prickled, some were smooth, or sticky, or fluffy. Some shone with colors unknowable, and others were darker than the darkness around the Child.

All were fascinating to observe, even if the Child couldn't learn about the Outside she wished for from them

The Child never reached for the Others, not in the way she did for Mother, but she slipped in amongst them gladly, grateful to them for their valiant efforts in alleviating her boredom while Mother was gone.
