The same word can mean multiple things. Because of course it can. It wasn't as if the inhabitant within Canyon was already having enough trouble figuring out the world and learning ever more about language when they were under the assumption that a single word had a singular meaning.

Though to be fair, The Mother, Gwillanth, still seemed incapable of understanding them, even though the others of the clutch now could hear and understand them, and as for Pertemarth, the inhabitant within Canyon wasn't sure that he could even hear them at all. But then again, he didn't come for the clutch so much as he came to support Gwillanth. In their memory of the hazy dreamtime before the inhabitant within Canyon became self-aware, it was the weight of The Mother's responsibility that left the strongest impression. They still had no idea why she felt that way, but if Pertemarth's presence helped ease that self-imposed burden, then the inhabitant within Canyon couldn't object to that. Even if they were sometimes befuddled by the jokes Gwillanth and Pertemarth would make between themselves.

Honestly, there were times when the inhabitant within Canyon would have felt like they were intruding upon Gwillanth and Pertemarth's conversations if it weren't for the fact that they were already here and stuck here and couldn't go anywhere else. If it were up to them, they'd happily go somewhere else out there and leave Gwillanth and Pertemarth to their quiet night of sleep and whatever else they wanted to do during that time. It wasn't explicitly said, but somehow the inhabitant within Canyon wasn't sure if they wanted to know, even though they wanted to know everything else about everything else that was out there. So they did not ask for clarification at that time. It's not like they would've been answered anyway.
