words! words words words

words are special. words are to be savoured. fog (itself a word, chosen for the way it eddies and swells and rolls in, thick and soft and heavy all at once) cherishes words. sometimes they add clarity, sometimes they hide it. minds are constant, a push and pull of feelings and thoughts and actions, but sometimes words add to how fog can understand them. mother and pertemarth are also mother-and-pertemarth, the emotions between them something it grasps easier with how they speak. it cannot understand the joke, but it senses it is there, that eventually its meaning will become clear

but better still is the encounter with shayled and dei'r, where words that say and mean one thing - come closer, please look - do not actually mean that. something in how they are said and what is done makes them mean something else entirely! and yet these second meanings are understood. there is a practiced, polished feeling to them, and fog repeats them over and over to itself to try and find out how it works

what a wonderful thing, to be able to mean several things at once. to reach out in one way, but keep distance at the same time. to have that be understood and accepted!

wonderful, but frustrating, to find that it can only clumsily mimic these phrases, echo the sound but not the intent. still, it will keep trying
