Patchwork liked when the-one-by-Mother (Pertemarth, a name that Patchwork eventually caught) was close.

His wasn't a mind Patchwork opened for, and never tried calling to attention or affection. At first it was surprise that there was something outside of Mother, Patchwork, and the other fluttering minds like Patchwork that kept the tiny dragon silent. Then Patchwork stayed silent in rapt fascination as Mother teased her mate.

Pertemarth. That was the impression of a name Patchwork found between the gentle banter. That and the name Gwillanth for Mother.

Whatever the space was between their words was - all soft and affectionate and vaguely obscured intent - absolutely fascinated Patchwork. That was where Patchwork wanted to exist! Away from Mother's irritation towards something unfamiliar and away from Shayled's frustration and hurt.

And why would Patchwork ever want to be bogged down in unpleasantness? Anger-frustration left an acrid sensation buzzing in Patchwork's still growing mouth and hurt felt like something heavy forming in Patchwork's fluttering little heart. The feelings, although not Patchwork's own, still felt so bad that Patchwork wanted only to withdraw entirely.

It seemed far better to laugh and tease and flirt the way Mother did with her Pertemarth. If other things mattered then it would be something other minds could be concerned over, not Patchwork. The moments of levity Patchwork caught glimpses of seemed far too few and few too far! And why? What part of not happy-laughing-flirting had any appeal? All of that was what Patchwork didn't want to be and knowing what not to be left a comfortable place for Patchwork to nestle.

An outline with bold lines and simple shapes. A mind where the answer to anything was humor and little more.
