The strange, half-real presences of your companions have been slowly growing more immediate in your awareness. What were far-off stars or barely-perceptible whiffs are now brilliant twinkles in your eyes and snout-wiggling scents. Whether by a sudden jolt or by a burgeoning wakefulness, you find you can reach them, speak to them -- or be spoken to.
For the longest time, perhaps even a burgeoning eternity, the Opal egg is a silent presence.
It is there, flaring to life each time Mother cares to pass her snout over its shell, but it does not reach out to the others around it. A child, sulking at the discovery that they are not unique, that they must share.
And so it goes time and again as Mother passes by the southern quadrant - reaction and then nothing.
Until, fed up, the Opal egg does more in Mother's absence.
To call it a greeting would be... well, kind. There are no "hello"s, no gentle acknowledgement. When the Opal egg bridges the gap between itself and the two eggs nearest to it, it is with the equivalent of a mental smack. Not unlike a Terran kitten batting its paw at a target of its displeasure, or a toddler striking at a sibling to instigate a squabble.
No kindness. No warmth. Only the beginnings of a tense and fraught relationship as Opal makes it clear it does not care for these others in its presence...
