When you first notice the fog in the distance, you don’t know how to feel.
It came with Mother one day, clinging to the surface of the waves and her warmth like seafoam. There was Feeling-not-Feeling when it touched you, touched you. HEY! Mother-Sun was the only one who did that!
What was this? This Feeling-not-Feeling was strange.
And slowly it grew. You began to notice them in the distance.
Other shores, blued by spans of sea and sky.
Other shores? Not other Suns. The distinction feels important, though you don’t know why.
Over time you learn that some come and go with Mother. Some move farther or closer of their own accord. You swear you can feel some greet you when you jump into the crest of a wave or swipe a wide arc of spraying sand. Others feel like pebbles stuck in uncomfortable places, or the surprising sting of salt. Once, when you touched a piece of sea wrack, the sharp edge of a shell bit you from its hiding place.
OW!
You avoided that one for some time, slinking back to the safety of the shore. This Feeling-not-Feeling was complicated: tangled, jumbled, fractured. Only pieces, shards of Mother’s Vast-Warmth-Light, but all, entirely of her confusing complexity.
