there were words that the egg already knew. it knew extremes. Mother and Nothing. Warmth and Cold. Something and Nothing. opposites it knew very well. but there were words that the egg did not know, words that Mother spoke to the egg. it loved that Mother spoke to it, that Mother caught its attention with what she did. at first the murmurs didn’t mean anything. the sound simply was.

slowly, though.

slowly the sounds give themselves meanings. Mother’s voice purrs, and the purrs become words that the egg learns.

the words the egg learns come slow at first, like the egg was slogging through a River (a word it learned from Mother, though it doesn’t understand what it is). then, like a floodgate, the egg begins to understand more. the sounds are no longer quite as random, the lilts and drops of Mother’s voice are not strange, and the egg begins thinking not in disjointed nothingness, but the same words it has stolen from Mother.

the words jumble together, the meanings meaningless, but the egg tries them out like someone would try on shoes.

as its mind churns, it heats, and its heat expands inside its shell. Heat.

Heat. like the Sun that it faintly understands. Heat like the Day and like Mother’s Warmth.

the egg decides Heat is its favorite word, and for a while, this word is all it can think. it doesn't matter if Mother doesn't understand. it understands, and soon She will, too.
