It wakes from a doze with a sudden awareness of more.

Until now, it had known only that what is consists of Mother, Not Mother, and itself. This had been all it needed to know. All other things, concepts Mother spoke of such as 'outside,' would become known as they were ready, each idea unfolding in its own time. This is how it has always been. There has never been unhappiness, impatience, a rush to know more - it can't change things, and this has never bothered it.

This changes the moment it becomes aware of more. These other presences, too different from Mother to be her, too like her not to be of her, take up the entirety of its mind as soon as it knows of them. For the first time, it experiences discontent, an urge to change something, to do something, to be something. Its frustration is startling, the sudden restlessness alien in comparison to its previously calm existence. It reaches out with fond, excited, adoring desperation.
