When Mother was closer Patchwork began to push further, using her closeness to measure all of what Patchwork was compared to the vast everything that was Mother. Pushing without attacking and always, always testing.

The realization of communication made Patchwork fumble abruptly, dropping the constant push-back against Mother under the weight of the realization. Patchwork didn't immediately loose the budding sense of self and that was a surprise. And when Patchwork wasn't trying to be Patchwork could finally listen.

Mother speaking to Patchwork had been the first thing Patchwork noticed, the direct contact bringing awareness to the change. But even when her attention shifted past Patchwork, Patchwork still strained to pay attention.

Contact with her was warm and comforting, something Patchwork sought after and tried to demand whenever Mother was close. Patchwork didn't know how but Patchwork wanted attention. Patchwork wanted love and affection and for her to be close without feeling like Patchwork stopped being.

Any time Mother brushed her mind against Patchwork, Patchwork reached back.
