Ah. This is what it means to be not warm.
The third concept the now slightly larger bundle of atoms and cells grasps is, once again, Nothing. It is an easy thing to forget when Something is there. The maybe-person-egg’s world expands to a ternary one, and it is filled with questions as much as it is a little bit more understanding.
Will something come back? Why must Warm-Something leave? Will there always be moments of nothing? The idea of Warm-Something being able to go ‘somewhere’ is as much an indication there is a ‘where’ as it is an indication there is something the Warm-Something has to do...Each moment of increasing cold is a chance for that stored energy to begin its inevitable downhill flow towards the next step it has to take. The maybe-person within the shell surges into something close to action each time it happens before it has a chance to forget and begin the cycle all over again.
Its questions are not wholly worded concepts yet, though, just the vague sparking of possibility crashing together. There is no concept of time either, to measure when or how long these moments last. The Warm-Something is there and then gone with no recognition of the time it took her to leave.
The breakthrough is close, so close. The burning warmth of discovery lingers at the edges, the bursts of recognisable thought longer than they’ve ever been before…Only to be soothed back into contented, binary Warmth. But the consequences of Nothing are irreversible, and the spontaneous movement of matter from warmth to cold has already started to happen.
