Duality is a concept that cannot yet be understood. The cosmic law of opposites and balance is far too advanced for the developing youngling. In time immeasurable, where all that is known is the pushpullpush at the safe-secure-solid-soft-sagacious-strong-sacred presence that is Mother, the world has not yet formed these concrete thoughts.

So when the safe-secure-solid-soft-sagacious-strong-sacred presence of Mother suddenly vanishes, the being within the opaline egg experiences something new.

It is not a welcome sensation. No. It grips, cold yet not, oppressive yet empty. They seize with the impact of it, the most minute of electrical currents firing over cellular synapses. Adrift, with naught but emptiness across a space so vast that to behold it is impossible.

One day, they will put a name to this - fear.

For now, however, the little life calms when Mother's safe-secure-solid-soft-sagacious-strong-sacred presence returns. And when She leaves, the unwelcome jittery-sharp sensation returns, wholly unpleasant in its sheer enormity. In time, this too may change. Fear, after all, breeds other things better left unsaid.
